Are You Feeling Worthless?
Do you feel worthless; a failure; unloved?
“Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.” [Matthew 10:29 NKJV]
The above scripture tells us that at the time Jesus said these words, two sparrows could be purchased for one copper coin.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God.” [Luke 12:6 NKJV]
Since we know that the price of two sparrows was one copper coin, Luke 12:6 tells us that one extra sparrow was “thrown in” as a “bonus” to a person who would purchase four sparrows. In other words, the fifth sparrow was deemed “worthless” and could be given away for free as an inducement to the buyer to purchase four sparrows.
Yet, Jesus says, “not one of them is forgotten before God” and in Matthew 10:29, He tells us that “not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will”. Sparrows? Sparrows are one of the most common birds throughout the world and they are generally not given much regard – they are not birds of beauty or admired for any particular quality. They are just “run-of-the-mill” common birds. Yet, God tells us that not one of them is forgotten to Him – including the bonus sparrow considered worthless by men.
“Do not fear therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows.” [Matthew 10:31 NKJV]
Do you feel like you are of “no value” / worthless? If God does not forget a single sparrow (out of all the flocks of sparrows in the world), how much more do you think He values you?
“But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore, you are of more value than five sparrows.” [Luke 12:7 NKJV] God knows you very intimately. You are His creation, in fact the highest of His creation. God made you in His image.
“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” [Genesis 1:26-27 NKJV] [The reference to “Our image” refers to God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. For an explanation of the triune God, please refer to the article Basics of Christianity].
“You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” [Psalm 139:15-16 NLT]
God loves you and will never forget you or consider you worthless (no matter what others may say or think about you or how even you may perceive yourself). But, until you have a relationship with Him, you will not experience this love. That relationship starts by receiving Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and Saviour.
If you would like to receive the gift of salvation that God has for you today, make a decision in your own heart that you want to be forgiven of your sins and that you wish to turn your back on a sinful life. Believe in the Kingdom of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ [Mark 1:15]. The Bible says if you confess with your mouth (i.e. actually say it) that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him (Jesus) from the dead, you will receive salvation [Romans 10:9-10]. Salvation is open to any human being who calls upon the name of the Lord [Romans 10:12-13].
If you want to get saved right now:
First silently read the text in the paragraph below and make sure you understand it. It is a confession prayer you can use to get born again this very moment.
If in your heart you agree with the content of the statement below then, read it again, but this time say it with your mouth out loud as you read it:
“Father, I thank You that you sent Your only Son, Jesus Christ, to take my sins and my punishment. Lord Jesus, I believe that You died for me and that God raised You from the dead. Today I confess that You are my Lord and my Saviour. Father, forgive me of all of my sins. Thank You Father that today, by Your grace, I am born again, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
